24 Oct Events: An Auspicious Beast
This continues to be the season of Makoto Chi 😉 Fresh from a group gallery show opening and artist talk at the Human Marks Tattoo Symposium last month at at the University of Hartford (some shots from that show at the start here!), he’s now in Vancouver exhibiting An Auspicious Beast, a long-in-the-works solo show at the SUM Gallery where he just completed a month-long residency.
We got to be along for the ride here as Makoto spent the last year bringing this new body of paintings to life using his own body — literal blood and spit alongside Sumi ink and gouache. Delving into queerness, the supernatural, cultural heritage and paradox, it’s clear on first glance that he poured out everything for these pieces.
Makoto’s giving a free artist talk tomorrow at the SUM gallery — register through this link to hear him go deep about what went into this process: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/an-auspicious-beast-artist-talk-tickets-1748918966709?aff=oddtdtcreator 5 PM in the gallery space!
An Auspicious Beast will be up at SUM gallery in Vancouver until December 6th, and Human Marks will be up at the Joseloff Gallery at the University of Hartford until December 13.
Congratulations, dude <333 🔥🩸
